Introduction

In recent years, museums and art galleries in Europe and around the world have been developing digital imaging techniques for archiving art works. Accurate digital images are better than conventional film for archiving because they are more stable and accurate.

Digital imaging allows new research possibilities and digital images can be used for damage analysis, publishing and Internet browsing.

This project presents various aspects of digital imaging of art. We first look at two European Commission funded digital imaging projects - VASARI and MARC. We then look at a comparison of the two systems and at some related projects. The VASARI system uses multispectral imaging and we discuss that next. We end by looking at applications of digital imaging in Internet browsing and future developments in digital imaging.
