Abstract: Human hearing is a remarkably sophisticated sensory system, enabling real-time perception of complex acoustic scenes, yet it is often taken for granted until it begins to deteriorate. Over 1.5 billion people worldwide live with hearing loss, creating a global health challenge associated with increased risks of cognitive decline, depression, and falls. Despite this, traditional hearing aids remain significantly underutilized, constrained by stigma and their historical role as standalone sound amplifiers.
This seminar introduces a new class of AI-enabled auditory systems that both enhance and augment human perception and communication. Advances in deep neural networks, embedded sensing, edge intelligence, and ultra-low-power computing are enabling nearly invisible, all-day wearable devices that extend well beyond hearing restoration. These systems deliver substantial gains in speech understanding while enriching everyday life through continuous health monitoring, fall detection, balance improvement, real-time language translation, conversation transcription, media streaming, and integration with personal AI assistants.
Together, they point toward a future in which auditory devices evolve into always-present, intelligent companions that operate at the intersection of perception, communication, and edge intelligence.
